Why This Thursday Made Me Cry

I know how sucky my work day is because of who is on talk radio 97.1 when I leave work. If it's Tom Leykis, work was awesome, and I'm leaving with a solid 8 hr day under my belt. I usually give the show a listen until the first time Leykis interrupts a one of his cultish white-trash call-in followers before slapping the radio off in disgust at his inability to argue with someone he can't use a mute button on. If I get out and Tim Conway Jr. is on, it means that my day was normal and I got to see no post-noon sunlight. Tim Conway Jr. has nothing interesting to say himself so usually fills up his show with callers who have nothing interesting to say. But Jr. has such a deep soft voice, and generally seems like a nice guy, so I indifferently listen to his soothing prattle on my short drive home. If I have a late, late night at work, I am subjected to the whines of John and Jeff at Night. The whiny male duo that is so mediocre, I actually have almost no opinion about them. Of course, except the fact that they whiiiiiiiiiine. But regardless of who is on, my evening talk radio is a STAPLE part of my weekday. That is until last Friday when 97.1 laid off all their talk-show hosts and turned 97.1 into a music station.

WWWHHHAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!

Now, I can do with out Tom Lykis, and I can do without John and Jeff, my ears will truly miss the soft droning of Tim Conway Jr, But one thing I cannot live without is my Adam Carolla. I listen to Adam Carolla religiously. I listen to him when I get up in the morning. I listen to him on my drive to work. I listen to his podcasts at work while I code. I listen to his podcasts when I go to the gym. I listen to his podcasts when I go on my long training runs.  This guy is seriously THE most interesting and talented comedian alive and ever alive EVER.  And thank god someone recognized this and put him on the radio to complain about the world for four hours a day every weekday morning for the last three years. BUT Then someone took the trio of him, and the genius Bald Brian, and the brainless Teresa Strasser out of my life. And I hate you person who works for CBS, and I hate you CBS.

I heard the news on the way into work on Thursday. The last day of my Dearly Beloved was on Friday. So Sad and So Sudden and So Wrong. It's times like these that make me wonder if there is a God and why would an almighty God wreak such tragedy on such an unsuspecting world.  Where the hell will I get my news now?

I freaked out when I heard. I listen to 100.9 KRZQ here in Reno and Adam Carolla was on during my way to work.

The next couple weeks they are doing 'the best of' Adam. But after that I'm going to have to download his podcasts that he will be doing on his website.

I was going to say that I couldn't imagine Adam Carolla hosting a radio show and doing Top Gear, but according to Wikipedia, nobody has picked up the US version of Top Gear. Too bad for Adam.

And too bad for talk radio. It's a great format. I used to listen to The John and Jeff Show in Boston, which was syndicated from KLSX. The format seems to be sort of thriving on satellite radio still, as much as satellite radio thrives.

You should check out The Best Show on WFMU. It's the wrong coast You'd have to listen via podcast or stream, but it's my pick for best 3 hours of radio in a given week anywhere. Tom Scharpling does not suffer foolish callers gladly.

I promise I'll give The Best Show a listen. I'm not a big music person, and would prefer talking.

I like hosts who are nice to their callers, though. That's one of the reasons I liked Adam.

Now I'm concerned about my suggestion. The Best Show is sort of like a club, and you need to be initiated into it. There are some fake callers who have an extended backstory to them. And it's at a different pace from commercial talk radio show. But Tom is really wonderful to his callers. And a lot of really great comedians appear on it. Patton Oswalt was in studio last week. Paul F. Tompkins is on a lot too.

I'll listen to it this week at work. Adam has his podcast, but it's only an hour so I do need some filler babble. I'll let you know how it goes over. My curiousity has been piqued. :)
